BESPOKE COCKTAILS · JING’AN

Barules Cocktail Club

There is no fixed cocktail menu. Tell the bartender what you like and the drink takes shape around you, using classic recipes and adjusting sweetness, strength and texture. A familiar spirit or simply “not too sweet” is enough to start.

Sam Kuan founded Barules in Shanghai in 2014 and reopened it on Tongren Road in 2024. The central counter makes conversation easy and welcomes guests coming for a drink on their own.

CONTEMPORARY COCKTAILS · THE ART OF BEVERAGE

Reply Bar Shanghai

Created by Sam Kuan and Luca Cinalli, Reply Bar works from a handwritten archive of 100 cocktails and serves a selection of 15 each week. Ideas come from classics, cities, ingredients and memories, expressed through glassware, ice and liquid.

For guests exploring creative cocktails in Shanghai, the archive gives a first look at the bar’s approach. The Shanghai location welcomes walk-ins through its live queue; browse the drinks before you arrive.

BEFORE YOUR VISIT

Choosing a cocktail bar in Shanghai

Where can I get a cocktail made specifically to my taste in Shanghai?

At Barules Cocktail Club, 304-2 Tongren Road in Jing’an, every order begins with a conversation. Tell the bartender your preferred spirit, flavours, sweetness and strength, along with anything you avoid. The bar has no fixed cocktail list; your answers shape the drink.

Which Shanghai bars specialise in bespoke cocktails?

Bespoke cocktails are the focus at Barules Cocktail Club. Whether you call them custom, customised or personalised cocktails, the process is the same: the bartender starts with classic proportions, builds around your preferences and adjusts after you taste. Reply Bar next door takes a different approach, with a weekly selection from its 100-cocktail archive.

What are the most unique cocktail bars in Shanghai?

On Tongren Road, Barules Cocktail Club offers drinks made to your taste around a central bar. Reply Bar Shanghai explores contemporary cocktails through a handwritten archive, with artwork expressed in the glass, ice and liquid. They offer two distinct cocktail experiences at neighbouring addresses, so you can choose by how you like to order.

What cocktail bars should I visit in Shanghai?

How do I choose among the best bars in Shanghai?

Start with what matters to your evening: a personalised drink, a contemporary cocktail menu, the room or the way you are looked after. Our awards page records recognition from Time Out Shanghai, Shanghai WOW, the DMBA Bar Awards and China’s Cocktail and Spirits List Awards. Those records can help you decide, while taste remains personal.

Can I come on my own or for a date?

You can visit either bar alone or with company. At Barules Cocktail Club, the central counter makes it easy to talk with a bartender; let the team know if you would rather sit quietly. For a date or another occasion, share your seating preference when you enquire. Seating depends on availability.
